University of Botswana (UB) - University of Pennsylvania collaboration (BUP), Gaborone, Botswana

The UCLA-UB-UPenn collaboration builds on the existing joint initiative of the UB, UPenn, and the Botswana MoH. The Botswana-UPenn Partnership (BUP) was established in 2001. BUP headquarters are on the UB campus, near Botswana’s main referral and teaching hospital. Other facilities include a main research office, a TB research office, lab space with state-of-the-art equipment at the MoH National Health Laboratory (NHL) and the Faculty of Health Sciences Building at UB, the Women’s Health Clinical/Research Facility, and other clinical and research office space in clinics across the country. The collaboration provides high-quality medical care and education, and facilitates international research, including several projects with Drs. Klausner and Shin (UCLA). Since 2003, BUP has provided technical support to the MoH through PEPFAR funding. Studies include HIV, TB, STIs, cancers, contraception, mental health, NCDs, telemedicine and mHealth, and spans basic, clinical and epidemiological research (e.g. R01AI097045, R21AI120838). BUP is committed to developing interdisciplinary training and research to address issues relevant to the health and welfare of the people of Southern Africa by strengthening local capacity, contributing to international scientific advancements, and inspiring junior investigators to pursue global health careers. BUP employs more than 100 full-time staff in Botswana, including 4 clinical faculty who are proposed GloCal mentors. Two recently completed the UCGHI-GloCal Fellowship/UJMT consortium-sponsored “Mentoring the Mentors in Global Health Research” training. BUP will offer GloCal training opportunities focused on HIV, TB, STIs, cancer and mental health.
